The restriction of the use of mobile phones during the school day seems to be evaluated positively, at least by the data and information that the Ministry of Education has from schools.
This measure seems to have significantly reduced the sources of tension within the school premises and the moments of disruption between students and between students and teachers.
The Minister of Education referred to the issue of the measure banning the use of mobile phones by students while they are at school, even during breaks, in the context of her recent interview with "F". As Athena Michailidou pointed out, "limiting the use of mobile phones was also an important measure. It limited sources of tension and gave more space to the real communication and socialization of the children."
In particular, Ms. Michailidou was asked to answer the question of whether the policies and measures that are often announced with the aim of dealing with violence and delinquency in schools, given the findings of even the Ministry itself on the increasing trend in recent years, have results and in fact, the expected ones.
As the competent Minister said, the issue of violence and delinquency is a complex social and pedagogical phenomenon, which is influenced by the family, the social environment, social media, the experiences of children and the climate of the school unit.
"We work horizontally and strategically, taking into account scientific data. That is why our policy is developed on many levels. Prevention, early detection, support for children, teacher training, strengthening schools with specialists, cooperation with families and clear management of serious incidents", she said, adding that "the new legislation for the prevention and treatment of school violence creates a more organized framework of responsibility. Every school must have a policy and action plan, record incidents and implement specific procedures."
She also made special reference to important professionals, who are involved in the school process with the aim of achieving the best possible results. As Ms. Michailidou mentioned, "at the same time, the presence of counsellors, heads of departments and social workers is strengthened, who are being placed in our schools for the first time. We emphasize mental resilience, self-esteem, social and emotional skills, and building relationships of trust at school."
Asked to comment on the results, the Minister of Education said that "what we have before us proves that we are in the right direction. Even restricting the use of mobile phones was an important measure. It reduced sources of tension and gave more space to the real communication and socialization of children. We have also discussed it at the European level, given that Cyprus has been a pioneer in this issue and the findings are very encouraging. Overall, in terms of violence, there are positive indications and good practices, but it would not be responsible to say that the problem has been solved. We have a long way to go and systematic work."
