After consultation between the Attorney General and the management of the Central Prisons, a list of persons who would be released from prison by the next few months was prepared. The list, after being approved, was signed by the President of the Republic.
The exception was those who have been convicted of offenses related to drug trafficking, sexual crimes, as well as those who have not completed half of their sentence.
According to information from Filenews, 27 Cypriot and 41 foreign prisoners were pardoned. The prison gates have been opened since this morning and for some foreigners the procedures for his arrest have already been initiated by decree of the Deputy Ministry of Migration in order to be transferred to the detention area in Limnes for deportation purposes.
At the moment, the prisoners in the prisons exceed 1,100 while the space can accommodate up to 800.
