A meeting was held on Monday under the Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris who gave instructions to put the facilities of the Menogia Center into operation as temporary detention centers by mid-September, with the aim of decongesting the police detention centers and improving the conditions of detention, according to a press release from the competent Ministry.
As mentioned, on the initiative of the Minister of Justice and Public Order Kostas Fytiris, the transformation of the Menogia Center into a Temporary Detention Center is proceeding, with the aim of dealing with overcrowding in police detention centers.
For this purpose, it is noted, the Minister convened a meeting today in his office, with the participation of the leadership of the Police, the Director and representatives of the Department of Public Works.
"During the meeting, the Minister gave instructions for the immediate promotion of all the necessary works and operational arrangements, so that the facilities can be put into operation by mid-September," it is added.
It is noted that the Menogeia Pre-Removal Detention Center, which is no longer used for the detention of foreigners after their transfer to the "Limnes" Center, will be used exclusively as Temporary Detention Centers for persons in police custody.
"Overcrowding in police detention centers requires immediate and practical measures. The utilization of the Menogeia Center will contribute substantially to their decongestion, to the improvement of pre-trial detention conditions and to the more effective management of detainees," the press release concludes.
