CRIME ROUND UP

 Pafos Live 22 August 2026

Indignation and anger are caused by the reckless action of a 65-year-old Greek Cypriot single parent to abandon his eleven-year-old daughter alone in their home in Paphos for two days. He went to Albania to watch last night's match in Paphos against the Albanian team Dinamo.

Following a complaint made to the authorities, the girl's father was arrested in the early hours of the morning upon the return of the fans to Cyprus. The case was immediately registered in Paphos Court today and was set for a hearing on September 18. The court decided to release the father of the eleven-year-old with the payment of a sum of €15,000. However, he was rearrested after fine warrants were pending against him.

Presenting the case to the court, a Police spokesman stated that between the dates of August 19 and 20 and while he had control and care of his child, he abandoned her and endangered her in a way that could cause unnecessary damage to her health. However, he claims that he assigned to his friends the responsibility of protecting and caring for the child for the two days he would be absent.

Officials of the provincial department of the Social Welfare services who have already taken over the care and protection of the child, characterize the case as a case of serious parental neglect without ruling out the removal of parental responsibility from the father.

The investigations of the TAE of Famagusta are intensive in relation to the attempted murder committed in the early hours of yesterday morning in Ayia Napa against a 33-year-old Greek Cypriot, who is the brother of a well-known lifer, aged 48, who was convicted of the quadruple murder committed in June 2016. The criminal act has put the Police in full mobilization, which is also turning its investigations to the Central Prison, since it is estimated that the perpetrators may have wanted to send a message to the lifer by executing his brother.

The Police, according to competent sources, are convinced that the perpetrators wanted the 33-year-old dead, which is also evidenced by the number of shots they fired aimed at the car in which the young man was riding, who was not injured. More than 15 shell casings were collected from the scene, while a house in the area was also hit by the shooting, without, fortunately, endangering the tenants.

The attempted murder was committed at 05:40 in the early hours of Friday, while the 33-year-old was driving his car in the Kokkines area in Ayia Napa. The perpetrators ambushed the 33-year-old a few meters away from his house and as soon as he tried to turn right, they opened fire, hitting his car several times.

Shortly after the attempted murder, a car was found burning in an open area in the Avgorou area. The spokesman of the Famagusta Police, Andreas Konstantinou, said that the specific vehicle was linked to the attempted murder and seems to have been the one used by the perpetrators. This is a Volvo brand vehicle, which had fake registration numbers and was found to have been reported as stolen to the Larnaca Police Department in the previous days.

In addition to the shell casings, other evidence from the two scenes has been found, while the burnt car will be put under the microscope of the Criminal Investigation Service of the Police Headquarters. Closed surveillance circuits are also under the microscope, in an attempt to identify the movements of the perpetrators.

The case, as everything shows, is related to organized crime, which has caused concern in the area.

The case of a 48-year-old man in Paphos, who since last Tuesday has been accused again of domestic violence offenses, has taken on dimensions. This is because the authorities are considering his possible involvement in other criminal cases.

The day before last night, a police operation was carried out at his premises in a village in the province of Paphos on the basis of allegations concerning illegal possession of weapons and trafficking in antiquities.

As "F" is informed, during the investigation no findings were found to support the aforementioned claims. However, the Police proceeded to confiscate material from closed circuit surveillance (CCTV) that the 48-year-old allegedly installed in some parts of the village.

According to our information, at first glance it appears that the cameras that the 48-year-old seems to have installed recorded visual material from public places, which may be illegal. This will be clarified by the examinations of competent Police officials.

The operation of the police force was carried out following an approved request by a Court for the issuance of a search warrant at the premises of the accused person.

In fact, what is striking was the wide participation of Police officials in this operation. As we are informed, various departments assisted in the investigations, such as the pyrotechnics and police dog branches. We are informed that the Department of Technological Development also participated.

As philenews had written last Tuesday, the name of the 48-year-old concerned the authorities on the occasion of issues of public interest that came to light since the beginning of the year and are related to Paphos. His name occupied the sphere of public debate in the province and beyond. Yesterday's big operation is a confirmation of all the above reports. That is, that his role is being examined by the authorities.

Indicted

Yesterday, moreover, the Paphos District Court decided that the 48-year-old will be in custody as a prisoner for the domestic violence case registered against him last Tuesday.

The 48-year-old, based on the indictment, had abusive behavior against his ex-partner. Three other identical cases have been registered with the Paphos District Court against him with the same woman complaining.

This fact, after all, was the basis for the request of the prosecuting authority to detain the accused until the completion of the trial. Her main legal argument was that there is a risk of "repetition of offenses against the complainant".

We remind you that the 48-year-old faces charges related to psychological violence, threats, insult, disobedience of a decree and contempt of Court.

The registration of the case against him came about after an alleged recent incident. Specifically, his arrest came after a verbal incident that took place at a recent public event, where the accused and his ex-partner were present.

"F" spoke with lawyer Alexandros Alexandrou, the 48-year-old's defense attorney. Commenting on the offenses he is facing, his client said that these are "alleged threats" and concluded by saying that "my client did not use violence".

The 48-year-old is also charged with a conviction against his ex-partner. According to a Court decision (2007) he had punched her in the abdomen and caused a ruptured spleen. A Senior District Judge had ruled that he was guilty of all three charges he was facing. The first concerned the offense of causing grievous bodily harm in violation of the Law that provides for the prevention of violence in the family and the protection of victims, the second the offense of causing grievous bodily harm to the complainant and the third charge of insult.
