AKEL strongly criticizes the government for waste management, speaking of "monumental incompetence" and arguing that the plans announced do not address the problem at its root. The party refers in particular to the situation in Pentakomo and Koshi, the EU procedures against Cyprus and the cost that, as it notes, is passed on to society and local government.

The incompetence of the N. Christodoulidis government in waste management is monumental. Cyprus continues to bury most of the waste it produces, the European Union is initiating proceedings against the country, but the government's response is again announcements of new plans amounting to €162 million. To continue as a country to bury instead of managing waste.
It is not enough that with the criminal mistakes and delays of both the current and the previous government, they left the country very exposed, even today - in the face of this tragic picture - they refuse to focus on how the country will acquire a comprehensive waste management policy.
The cost of their failure cannot continue to be paid by society. The situation is desperate for public health, for households but also for the local government that will undertake - based on the reform - the management of the OEDA without having the corresponding funding.
AKEL reiterates that the situation in Pentakomo and Koshi is not a simple technical problem but the result of bad planning, failures, delays and the absence of a comprehensive policy. This is what the government has to deal with.
