TWO DANGEROUS APARTMENT BUILDINGS WERE DEMOLISHED IN AGIOS ATHANASIOS - END OF 12 YEARS PROCEEDINGS

TWO DANGEROUS APARTMENT BUILDINGS WERE DEMOLISHED IN AGIOS ATHANASIOS - END OF 12 YEARS PROCEEDINGS - Filenews 9/7 by Ioanna Mantziipa

An end to a pending issue that lasted for more than 12 years was given today in Agios Athanasios, with the demolition of two apartment buildings in the settlement of the area, the apartments of which remained abandoned for years.

The two buildings had been classified as dangerous and their demolition was made possible after persistent efforts by the Municipal Authority and the former Municipality of Agios Athanasios, as well as by the actions of the deputy mayor of Agios Athanasios, Marinos Kyriakos.

As Mr. Kyriakou told Filenews, the process was particularly time-consuming, since it took about 12 years of consultations and actions in collaboration with the Department of Urban Planning, in order to complete all the required procedures.

The process was not easy, as commercial shops were operating on the ground floors of the apartment buildings and some tenants did not proceed with the evacuation of the premises, delaying the completion of the required actions.

Asked whether there are other dangerous buildings in the area, the deputy mayor said that in Agios Athanasios there are no more buildings that need demolition.

It is noted that in recent years these facilities had been turned into a point of gathering and trafficking drugs, while in some cases they were also used as a shelter for homeless people.
