TELEPHONE SCAMS WITH CYPRIOT NUMBERS - BANKING DETAILS THE TARGET - Pafos Press 2/7
Recently, there have been increased reports from citizens about scams through telephone calls with numbers that appear to be Cypriot
When calling, a pre-recorded message is initially heard stating that the call is being made by the National Police Security Office and that the citizen's identity information is linked to suspicious activities.
Citizens are then asked to select a number and the call is transferred to a person who presents himself as an official. This person claims that bank accounts have been created in the citizen’s name, in banking institutions located in Cyprus and that large sums of money are being transferred through them. With this claim, the perpetrators seek to learn bank account details as well as other personal data, with the aim of extracting sums of money.
Note
There have also been several calls in the Tala area [from no 96 916121] - in all cases from someone with an Indian voice
1 Claiming that a PayPal account has been hacked, with a payment to Kenya, and the server showing that the person being called is in the USA when they are in Cyprus. This call was preceded with two calls from unknown numbers in Portugal - whether these were connected, is not known
2 Claiming to be from the Cyprus Police claiming that a bank card has been used, money taken from an ATM
3 Claiming to be from the Cyprus Police, with suspicious activity linked to their Cypriot ID and that an arrest warrant had been issued against the recipient as a result.
If you receive such a call, please hang up and block their phone no. Do not give any information whatsoever.
