A new case of online fraud with investments in cryptocurrencies is being investigated by the Police in the province of Limassol, following a complaint filed today by a 60-year-old woman.

According to the 60-year-old's complaint, last June, she received an e-mail message, which appeared to have been sent from an online bank, in which there was a reference to a great opportunity to invest in cryptocurrencies, with very high returns on profit.

After the 60-year-old contacted the sender of the message, through an electronic communication application, she followed his instructions and through an electronic link, which he sent her, she registered on an online cryptocurrency trading platform, while also creating an online wallet.

During the same year, the 60-year-old transferred a sum of money of €135,000 to an account she maintains on an online trading platform, from an account she maintains in a bank in Cyprus. Later, however, she found that the amount of €135,000 had been extracted from her online account and transferred without her consent to various online cryptocurrency wallets, to which she does not have access.

The case is being investigated by the Financial Crime Investigation Office, of the Limassol Police Department.

The Police, on the occasion of this new fraud complaint, recommends caution, urging the public to cooperate only with recognized companies and approved financial investment advisors for any transactions and investments via the internet.

A woman from Vietnam was arrested for illegal stay, transferred to the detention center of Mennogeia and during the inspection it was found that she was loaded with thousands of euros and jewellery. Because she did not give sufficient explanations for how she obtained them, she found herself accused in Court.

The woman came to Cyprus in 2017 and after staying five years in the occupied territories came to the free areas and ended up in Limassol. According to her, she cleaned up to three houses a day, working 10-12 hours and secured about €3000 per month. She was recently arrested by the Police for the crime of illegal stay and taken to the detention center in the Limnes area, with the aim of deporting her.

During the check of her luggage on 13/05/2026, the sum of €11,950 in various banknotes and a large number of jewellery with a total value of €20,000 and three mobile phones were found in her possession, for which she did not give sufficient explanations regarding how they were found in her possession.

Although there is not any complainant who claims that his property is his, she was eventually found accused of the crime of illegal possession of property.

She had stated in her testimony that the money found in her possession was her savings from her work. As she said, she did not issue receipts for her work. She claims that the jewellery found in her possession is all hers.

Her former employer gave her a ring that belonged to his deceased mother, while he bought two more rings from a jewellery store in Mesa Geitonia in Limassol. He does not remember the name of the jewellery store. They cost around €400 each but he has no receipts for their payment. A silver cross she states that she bought  from a jewellery store near the marina. However, she does not remember either the name of the store or the purchase price of the cross.

She also states that she bought three plastic rings from the bazaar for €10 each. The rest of the jewellery was brought from Vietnam and occupied Cyprus. Despite pointing to a jewellery store, the owner testified that he had never sold the two rings in question which are around 25 years old.

A court in Larnaca ruled that the property found in her possession was stolen, since the money and jewellery found in her suitcase were stored in a way that does not befit such a high-value property.

In particular, they were wrapped in socks and tissues. Furthermore, while the accused stated that she is a Buddhist in religion, among the jewellery found in her possession there were Christian religious symbols, such as crosses and pendants with the Virgin Mary.

"In view of the above data assessed as a whole, I consider that there is a reasonable suspicion that the property found in the possession of the accused is stolen property," the Court ruled, and now she is expected to be sentenced and it will be decided what will happen to the stolen property.

It is noted that she had admitted the charge of illegal stay but for that of possession of illegal property she answered in the negative, which is why a hearing was held.
