YKAN GOVERNOR - INCREASED CASES OF CANNABIS AND COCAINE - EUROPEAN DRUG MARKET IS INCREASINGLY COMPLEX - Filenews 10/6

The increasing trend in the availability of narcotic substances, especially in cannabis and cocaine, is not only observed at European level, but is a global phenomenon and that is why YKAN, as well as the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA), utilize statistics, receive data, set national and European targets and cooperate in order to combat the trafficking and distribution of these substances. said the Commander of the Anti-Narcotics Service (YKAN) Christos Andreou.
The Governor of YKAN made the statement in the light of the European Drug Report 2026, the findings of which were presented on Tuesday, in Brussels, but also in Nicosia, recording, among other things, an increasingly complex European drug market, with increased availability of substances, greater power and diversification, as well as the intensified activity of organized criminal networks.

Asked if the increased availability is also related to increased cases of drug detection and traffickers, the Commander of YKAN stated that in the first five months of 2026, 72 kilograms of cocaine were seized, while for the whole of 2025 the total amount of cocaine seized was 52 kilograms.

He also pointed out that new preparations such as the psychostimulant captagon have entered the drug trade, noting that from the beginning of 2026 until now, more than 1000 captagon tablets have been seized, while in 2025 it was limited to about 32 tablets.

Continuing, he said that the seizures of other preparations containing narcotic substances which cause many problems of toxicity to the body of users and drug dependence were also increased.

From contacts with competent European services and services of third countries, it is accepted that the trend of drug disposal and use is increasing as well as seizures, he said.
