THEY GAVE LIFE BACK TO THE HISTORIC HARLEY-DAVIDSON OF ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS - Filenews 17/6

An important part of modern Cypriot history has come back to life, as the historic Harley-Davidson motorcycle on display at the Police Museum has been fully restored and put back into service, after more than 50 years of immobility.

According to a post by the Police on social media, the restoration was carried out after a cooperation agreement between Harley-Davidson Cyprus and the Cyprus Police, with the company fully assuming the cost of the reconstruction work.

This motorcycle is one of the most important exhibits of the Police Museum, as it belonged to the guard of the first president of the Republic of Cyprus and Archbishop of Cyprus, Makarios III.

According to historical data, the motorcycle had been donated to Archbishop Makarios along with two more motorcycles and a Cadillac car from a Cypriot of America, who was a shareholder of the Cadillac company.

For years, Harley-Davidson spearheaded Archbishop Makarios' official processions, forming an integral part of his entourage in public appearances and ceremonies.

Over the decades, however, the machine remained immobilized, until the recent initiative to fully restore it.

In excellent condition

After the completion of the maintenance and reconstruction works, the historic motorcycle is now in excellent and fully functional condition, while maintaining its historic and collectible character.

The Cyprus Police expressed its warm thanks to Harley-Davidson Cyprus for its significant contribution to the preservation and promotion of a valuable piece of the historical and cultural heritage of Cyprus, underlining the importance of such initiatives for the rescue of historical relics associated with the course of the place.
