The United States remained the largest supplier of liquefied natural gas to the European Union in the first quarter of 2026, accounting for 57.4% of total LNG imports, according to Eurostat data.
In the LNG sector, Russia was in second place with a share of 17.3%, followed by Qatar with 6.6%.
Overall, EU liquefied natural gas imports decreased by 8% in value compared to the monthly average of 2025. However, in terms of volume, they increased by 2.9%, reflecting the change in international energy prices.
Imports of natural gas in gaseous form recorded a decline in both value and quantity. The value of imports decreased by 12.7%, while the volume fell by 4%.
Norway maintained its position as the largest pipeline gas supplier, covering 54.4% of the European Union's gaseous gas imports. Algeria followed with 18.5% and Russia with 9.8%.
In oil imports, volumes remained almost stable in the first quarter of 2026. The value of imports increased marginally by 0.8%, while the volume decreased by 0.6%.
The United States was the EU's largest supplier of oil, with a share of 17.8% of total imports. It was followed by Norway with 16.6% and Kazakhstan with 9.6%.
The data highlights the EU's expanding energy dependence on the US, particularly in the LNG sector, while Norway remains the main pipeline gas supplier.
