Evenly chopped by mechanical means are the small pieces of plastic found on many beaches of Paphos, but also in other areas of the island. Their appearance in recent days has caused significant disturbance to bathers but also concern about the environmental impact.
The director of the health services of the municipality of Paphos, Christos Christou, stated that the local authority has created an improvised mechanism for the removal of small pieces of plastic from sandy beaches of the municipality. A kind of sieve collects the plastics from the beaches while at the same time samples have been sent for analysis to laboratories.
From the letters on the shredded packages, it appears that the source of origin is neighbouring countries and what is speculated is that due to an accident, perhaps during their transport by ship for recycling, they ended up at sea.
The municipality of Paphos, as revealed by Mr. Christou, in cooperation with the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, plan to assign the supervision of the entire coastline to a private individual. The private individual with a special boat and other equipment will be able to intervene and prevent similar incidents in the future of marine pollution.
