A new case of internet fraud and extortion of a large amount of money, is being investigated by the Police in Limassol. The perpetrators managed to extort a sum of money amounting to €90,000.

The case was reported today to the Limassol Police Department, by a 59-year-old man, according to whom, he recently spotted a car being advertised for sale on an online buying and selling application. After the 59-year-old contacted the alleged company that sold the vehicle, he agreed to buy it, at a price of €90,000, which would include the costs of transporting the vehicle to Cyprus, from a European country.
For the purchase, the 59-year-old proceeded to transfer the money to an account in a bank in a third European country, which was indicated to him by the alleged sellers of the vehicle. Later, after the 59-year-old proceeded to a check on the internet, he found that the company that allegedly sold the car was not a real company and that he had been deceived.

The Financial Crime Investigation Office of the TAE Limassol is investigating the case.

On the occasion of this new fraud complaint, the Police recommends that the public be careful when making transactions via the internet and in particular when conducting financial transactions with unknown persons and organizations. It is recommended that before any payment of money, the persons and organizations involved are checked.
