FUEL PRICES INCREASED BY 20.5% IN CYPRUS IN MAY - WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE REST OF EUROPE - Filenews 22/6




Cyprus recorded a 20.5% increase in the prices of fuels and lubricants for personal transport in May 2026, compared to the corresponding month of 2025, according to data published on Monday by Eurostat.

The increase in Cyprus was very close to the European Union average, which stood at 20.7%. According to the Agency's data, fuel and lubricant prices increased in all EU Member States on an annual basis.
The largest increases were recorded in Bulgaria with 33.9%, Luxembourg with 32.2%, Lithuania with 30.8% and Romania with 30.4%. The smallest increase was recorded in Hungary with 3.5%, while in the rest of the countries the increases ranged from 12.7% in Poland to 29.2% in France.

Eurostat points out that until February 2026, fuel and lubricant prices generally showed a downward trend in the EU, before following an upward trend in the coming months.

At the European Union level, diesel prices increased by 29% in May 2026 compared to May 2025, while gasoline prices recorded an increase of 16.2%.

On a monthly basis, however, consumers in the EU saw diesel prices fall by 5.8%, compared to April 2026, while gasoline prices increased by 0.8%.

In Cyprus, diesel prices fell by 1.5% between April and May 2026. The decrease was smaller compared to the EU average and significantly lower than the larger decreases recorded in Germany (-11.9%), Greece (-8.5%), Estonia (-8.4%) and Ireland (-8.1%).

In contrast, gasoline prices in Cyprus increased by 2.1% in May compared to April. This development is part of the general trend recorded in the EU, where 23 Member States recorded monthly increases in petrol prices.

The largest monthly increase in gasoline prices was recorded in Italy with 6.9%, while decreases were recorded in Germany (-5.6%), Ireland (-2.0%) and Sweden (-0.7%).
