FOUR PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES WITHIN A FEW HOURS ON THURSDAY, ON A DAY MARKED BY SUCCESSIVE TRAGEDIES - Pafos Press 19/6
The three deaths were recorded in maritime areas, while the fourth case is still surrounded by questions, with the newly-announced autopsy expected to shed light on the exact causes of death.
The day began with the news of the discovery of a 69-year-old Greek Cypriot floating unconscious in the sea area of Kiti. The initial assessments of the Authorities converge on the possibility of drowning, however, it is not ruled out that his death was due to pathological causes. The exact causes are expected to be determined through the autopsy.
A few hours later, another case of death became known, involving a 29-year-old man from Syria. Although the incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday, the authorities were informed later. According to the information under investigation, the 29-year-old was allegedly involved in an incident at a car park, stole a vehicle from the area and then collided with it in a traffic accident.
Despite the fact that no external injuries were found after the accident, the young man later experienced respiratory failure and shock, resulting in him being taken to hospital, where he succumbed at around 03:00 in the morning.
The circumstances that led to the deterioration of his condition and whether it is related to the traffic accident remain unknown. The autopsy that will follow is expected to provide answers and determine the exact cause of death.
The double tragedy that unfolded late in the afternoon in the sea area of Oroklini, where two young women lost their lives, also caused particular emotion and sadness.
Around 19:30, the Search and Rescue Coordination Center activated the National Search and Rescue Plan “NEARCHOS” to locate and rescue two women of Somali origin who were in danger at sea. The operation involved forces from the Port and Maritime Police, lifeguards, as well as two ambulances from the OKYpY Ambulance Service.
The two 20-year-olds, who were legally residing and working in Cyprus, were pulled unconscious from the sea and taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
According to information so far, the two women were in the area with at least three other people. Three of them are reported to have entered the sea near the breakwaters and were swept away by the strong sea currents, calling for help.
Despite the immediate mobilization of citizens and competent services who rushed to assist in the rescue, only one girl managed to be saved, while the other two were pulled dead, plunging their relatives and friends into mourning.
