FISHING SHELTER - PROJECT OVER €6 million IN KATO PYRGOS

FISHING SHELTER - PROJECT OVER €6 million IN KATO PYRGOS - Filenews 5/6 by Angelos Nikolaou

A new era, full of expectations for the economic, tourist and fishing revitalization of the border area of Tylliria, dawns with the official announcement of the grandiose project "Improvement of the Fishing Shelter of Kato Pyrgos" by the Department of Public Works.

This is a decades-old request, which is now taking shape, with the investment budget exceeding €6 million. The project aims at the complete remodelling and modernization of the existing port facilities. The border community, which often faces problems of geographical isolation, now acquires a modern and safe maritime gateway, capable of serving both professional and amateur fishermen, as well as the increasing recreational navigation.

The main tasks

The study of the project is particularly complex, as it combines advanced port engineering with environmental care to protect the sensitive bay of Tylliria. Key tasks include:

1. It is planned to lengthen and strengthen the main windward breakwater with natural boulders and special prefabricated artificial concrete elements, in order to ensure the full protection of the port basin from the intense northwest waves that affect the area during the winter months.

2. Extensive dredging (seafloor excavations) will be carried out to remove alluvial deposits and increase the operational depth of the shelter, allowing the safe entry and berthing of vessels with a larger draft.

3. The existing berthing fronts will be replaced by new, modern reinforced concrete quays, equipped with new bollards, buffers and safety ladders.

4. The creation of a station for the collection of used oil and waste from boats, as well as the installation of integrated fire-fighting systems, is planned.

The project will be financed from national resources, with possible co-financing from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Funds. The estimated value of the contract reaches €6,121,200 (plus VAT).

The timetables

The deadline for the submission of tenders has been set for July 17, while the evaluation will be made on the basis of the most economically advantageous offer based on price and technical ability. The duration of the execution of the works is estimated at 24 months from the day of signing the contracts (17/11/2026) with the successful contractor. This means that, if the procedures go smoothly and there are no appeals to the Tender Review Authority, the renewed fishing shelter will be delivered fully operational within 2028.

At the same time, the project is expected to create dozens of jobs during its construction, while in the long term it will highlight Kato Pyrgos as an attractive maritime destination, bridging the distance with the large urban centers of the island. The Department of Public Works has set this project as a high priority, the need to support the remote and remote areas of the country.
