The request for the conduct of the proceedings behind closed doors submitted before the Permanent Criminal Court of Limassol by the Prosecuting Authority during today's appearance of the suspended mayor of Paphos, Phaedon Phedonos, was not accepted.

Specifically, the charges were allowed to be brought against the accused Pheadon, without mentioning the name of the complainant, who answered negatively to all five charges.

Phedonos faces five counts, which relate to the offenses of rape, two counts of indecent assault, causing actual bodily harm, as well as administering a drug or other substance capable of inducing narcosis and neutralizing the victim's strength or ability to react or resist.

Following this development, the Court set the case for a hearing on May 27 to July 31, at 9:00 a.m. The Prosecution Authority came back with a request to conduct the proceedings behind closed doors for the entire duration of the proceedings. The defendant's lawyer asked for time to speak on the request and the court adjourned for twenty minutes.

It is recalled that at the beginning of the proceedings, the representative of the Prosecuting Authority requested that the trial of the case be conducted entirely behind closed doors, citing, among other things, the need to protect the complainant and the provisions of the relevant legislation.

On the part of the defense, the lawyer of the accused, Christos Pourgourides, stated that he will raise an objection to the request, arguing that at this stage of the process the charges could be brought without any reference to the name of the complainant.

Taking the floor, the representative of the Prosecution stated that she has prepared a written speech, in which she will refer to Article 32 of the Constitution, as well as a series of legislation related to the protection of victims. As he said, the indictment includes details of the case, as well as the name of the complainant, which should be protected.

The Court raised the question whether the complainant's name could be removed from the present proceedings. In response, the representative of the Prosecution stated that the second category describes a specific act and that it is not possible to omit certain references.

"We want to protect the victim. There are attributable acts and details in the charges. These are particularly sensitive issues," he said.

The President of the Criminal Court returned to the question, pointing out that the reference to the name of the complainant could have been avoided.

After the conclusion of the positions of the two sides, the Court adjourned for a short period of time, in order to examine the request of the Prosecution Authority. He then decided to reject the request.

The Limassol District Court yesterday imposed a 24-month prison sentence on a defendant, who, after a hearing, was found guilty of charges related to theft, burglary of a residence with the intention of committing a felony, theft from a residence, as well as possession of burglary tools and theft. The value of the stolen goods amounts to €4,400.  The accused was called to apologize and chose to testify under oath, while no additional testimony was presented by the defense.

According to the findings of the Court and from the testimony submitted by the Prosecuting Authority, represented by the Public Prosecutor Panikos Arvrammidis, it appears that the house in question was the residence of the complainant and his family in Limassol. It was not an abandoned or deserted premises but a house that was furnished and equipped, had electricity and water, internet access, electrical appliances and personal belongings. The owners used it and visited it on weekends.
On December 7, 2025, the owners left for Nicosia and, after previously securing the doors and windows, left the residence. At the time of departure, inside the house were, among other things, a television, a large carpet, a set of bronze coffee cups, four silver bowls, a necklace with white and pink pearls and a hairdryer.

On December 13, 2025, the accused was looking for a property in which he could spend the night and, apparently, ended up in a residence that he considered "convenient". After approaching the property and finding that there was no light and no presence of tenants was visible, he checked doors and windows and then went to the back of the house. Finally he entered through a window, which was closed but not locked.

From then on, according to the findings of the Court, the house seems to have been temporarily converted into a place of residence. The accused remained at home for three days, during which he slept on the sofa, bathed, ate and drank coffee, as if it were a normal daily life.

In fact, he had also removed the keys to the house, using them to enter and exit normally.

The situation was revealed when the owners returned on December 15 and found a mess and absence of items. After realizing that there had been a burglary, they installed a security camera in the living room, on the advice of the Police. On the same day, the camera recorded the presence of a person inside the house holding a light, which led to the immediate notification of the authorities.

The Police went to the area and, although they initially did not locate anyone, then, after a search, they located the accused in the toilet area, next to the living room. The defendant admitted that he was not the tenant of the house and claimed that he entered only to spend the night, a claim which was not accepted by the Court. He also stated that he is a Syrian and that he entered the Republic of Cyprus in December 2018 by sea, from Turkey to the occupied areas.

A quantity of cocaine in liquid form, weighing four kilograms, was located and confiscated at Larnaca Airport. The large amount of drugs was found in the luggage of a 65-year-old man who was arrested to facilitate investigations.

In the context of the cooperation of YKAN with the Customs Authorities to identify persons who import drugs into Cyprus, around 2.15 p.m. Yesterday, at the suggestion of members of YKAN, a customs officer stopped a 65-year-old man who arrived at Larnaca Airport from a foreign country for a check. During the search of his luggage, 10 nylon packages with a suspicious liquid substance were found, which were carefully hidden in plastic cosmetics containers.

Further examinations revealed that it is cocaine in liquid form with a total gross weight of 4 kg.

The 65-year-old was arrested for a self-inflicted crime and taken into custody to facilitate investigations.

It is noted that this is the first time that cocaine in liquid form has been found in Cyprus in such a quantity.

YKAN (Larnaca District Unit) continues the examinations.

Update - A 65-year-old man from the USA, who was arrested yesterday at Larnaca airport, was placed in eight-day detention by the Larnaca District Court, when 4 kilograms of cocaine in liquid form were found in his luggage.

It is noted that this is the first time that cocaine in liquid form has been detected in Cyprus in such a large quantity, a fact that has alerted YKAN, given that a specialized laboratory is needed for its deacidification.

For this reason, the investigations are turning in various directions to see if there is such an illegal laboratory in our country. The 65-year-old arrived in Cyprus yesterday afternoon from Canada via a flight from Vienna.

Shortly after 2 pm, a customs officer, at the suggestion of members of YKAN, stopped the pensioner for an inspection. During the search of his luggage, 10 nylon packages with a suspicious liquid substance were found, which were carefully hidden in plastic cosmetics containers. Further examinations revealed that it was cocaine in liquid form, with a total gross weight of 4 kg.

The 65-year-old was arrested and reportedly refuses to cooperate with the Police. The liquefied form of cocaine is prevalent mainly in Latin America. It liquefies because it is not easily detected and then needs specialized chemical treatment to dehumidify and export it into solid form.
