Cyprus recorded a population of 982,966 inhabitants on January 1, 2025, up from 966,365 in 2024, according to data published on Thursday by Eurostat as part of the European Union's annual demographic survey.
At the European Union level, the population amounted to 451 million inhabitants in 2025, an increase of about one million compared to 2024. As Eurostat reports, the EU continues to record marginal population growth, while at the same time demographic changes related to the aging population are accelerating.
Cyprus' position in the EU
Cyprus remains among the least populous member states of the European Union, accounting for around 0.2% of the total EU population. In the ranking of Member States, the largest populations are recorded in Germany (84 million), France (69 million), Italy (59 million), Spain (49 million) and Poland (36 million), which account for 66% of the total population of the Union.
According to Eurostat data, the EU's population has grown from 435 million in 2005 to 451 million in 2025, an increase of around 4% over 20 years. Over the same period, 19 Member States recorded population growth and 8 decreases.
Cyprus is among the countries with the highest relative population growth in the period 2005–2025, with an increase of about 34%.
Ageing population
At EU level, the share of people aged 65 and over increased from 17% in 2005 to 22% in 2025, with 6% of the population aged 80 and over.
The median age in the EU stood at 44.9 years in 2025, compared to 39.6 in 2005, confirming the continued ageing of the population.
In Cyprus, the median age is 41 years, below the EU average.
Age structure
In the European Union, children and adolescents under the age of 15 make up 14% of the population, while in Cyprus the percentage is 15.2%.
The proportion of people aged 80 and over is 6% at EU level.
Migration and mobility
In 2024, around 6 million people migrated to the European Union, with 74% coming from third countries and 26% from other EU Member States.
In Cyprus, migrant inflows were recorded at 40,471 people in 2024, up from 40,761 in 2023.
At the same time, about 3.1 million people migrated outside the EU in the same year, with Cyprus recording 26,883 departures in 2024, compared to 26,979 in 2023.
Natural population change
Eurostat points out that since 2012, deaths have exceeded births in the EU, with the gross rate of natural change set to be −2.8% in 2024.
In Cyprus, the corresponding index is positive, at 3.1%, ranking the country among the few states with positive physical change, along with Ireland and Luxembourg, having 3.4% and 2.9% respectively.
Population mobility within the EU
At Union level, 45 million people (10%) live in a country other than that of their nationality, of which 14 million (3%) are citizens of another EU Member State.
