The building of the old control tower at Paphos airport has been deemed dangerous and the Civil Aviation has submitted a request for its demolition for reasons of airport safety.
The above is recorded in a text by the Minister of Transport, Mr. Alexis Vafeadis, who was answering a question by AKEL Paphos MP Valentinos Fakontis.
In the same answer, it is also stated that "according to the plans of the state, there is a decision for the Creation of an Aircraft Service Terminal for Distinguished Persons/General Aviation at the facilities of Paphos Airport in the old arrivals building of the airport.
Furthermore, the minister informs Mr. Fakontis that the company HERMES has informed the government that it has taken a number of actions to find an investor for the purpose of exploiting/using the above facilities, without reaching an agreement to date.
In Vafeadis' answer, the following is also recorded:
-Regarding your question, regarding the better use of the old facilities of Paphos Airport, I would like to inform you that they are located to the west of the existing terminal and consists of 2 main buildings, the old arrivals building and the old departures building, as shown in the image below. Between the two buildings are warehouses, which are used as "Cargo" and which also house the Police offices. In addition, the building of the old control tower has been deemed "dangerous" and the Civil Aviation has submitted a request for its demolition for airport safety reasons.
-On 12 May 2006, the Concession Agreement between the Republic of Cyprus and Hermes Airports Ltd was implemented, under which Hermes undertook the financing, design, construction, maintenance, operation, management and development of the Larnaca and Paphos International Airports for a period of 25 years, against payment to the Republic of Cyprus of a Concession Fee. It is noted that the company Hermes has been given the exclusive right to develop premises within the area ceded by the Republic under the Agreement.
As for the old departures building of Paphos Airport, at the moment, there is no planning from HERMES. This is expected to be examined in the context of the preparation of the new terms of the Concession Agreement.
