Rents in some areas of Cyprus are higher than the salary of mainly young couples who are trying to create their own lives and their own home. The numbers regarding the amount of rents do not lie as to the difficulties faced especially by young couples who want to move into their own home, even with rent. In fact, the amount of rents largely answers why many children live in their parents' house until... 40.
The issue of high rents may be dated, but what is troubling is their continuous increase. Some ups and downs that are observed do not seem able to change the situation.
Governments from time to time – and the present one – have announced housing programs, especially for young couples and other population groups, but they either did not work to the extent expected, or they want their time, in the sense that a significant number of housing units were not added in order to increase supply to a degree that would drive rents down.
It is reported that for new three-bedroom houses without furniture, the rent ceiling can reach up to €2,300 in some areas. Of course, if someone looks for even used units in the bazaar, the differences are not so important.
In general, as shown by data from the Ministry of the Interior for March (when the last calculation was made by the Land Registry Department), rents in city centers are higher than in their outskirts or even in the communities around them.
