NATIONAL COUNCIL LINE-UP CHANGES FOLLOWING ELECTION - in-cyprus 25/5
The results of Sunday’s parliamentary elections are set to change the composition of the National Council, as the new parliamentary line-up directly affects party participation in the body.
The National Council consists of the President of the Republic, who chairs the body, the leaders or representatives of parliamentary parties represented in the House, and the House president.
As a result, the changes in parliament after the election will also affect the National Council, with party leaders whose parties failed to secure parliamentary representation leaving the body.
EDEK will no longer be represented in National Council meetings after being left outside parliament following 56 years of continuous presence. The Green Party – Citizens’ Cooperation will also be left out after 25 years of parliamentary representation, as will Dipa.
At the same time, two newly established political formations will enter the National Council. ALMA and Direct Democracy, which secured parliamentary representation, will participate through their leaders or representatives.
Odysseas Michaelides and Fidias Panayiotou, or representatives of their parties, will attend meetings at the Presidential Palace when the President of the Republic convenes the National Council.
DISY, AKEL, ELAM and DIKO will continue to be represented in the National Council after retaining parliamentary representation in the new House. Their party leaders are Annita Demetriou, Stefanos Stefanou, Christos Christou and Nicolas Papadopoulos respectively.
