The authorities of Larnaca are eagerly awaiting the proposal of the Port Authority for a port and marina, which will include, as decided at the recent meeting at the Presidential Palace, developments of the two infrastructures and land space of 50,000 sq.m. as well as a plan for the unification of the coastal fronts of Finikoudes and the area of the former refineries.
It is noted that today marks two years since the termination of the contract with Kition Ocean Holdings, with Larnaca having so far not seen any substantial projects in the two infrastructures and hoping that after the decisions at the Presidential Palace, the projects will finally be implemented.
Yesterday afternoon, the Larnaca Development Committee met. During the session, the Mayor of Larnaca and Chairman of the Committee, Andreas Vyras, informed the members about what was discussed and agreed during the meeting held at the Presidential Palace on May 15, 2026, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, with the object of upgrading and developing the port, the marina and the land area of the port of Larnaca. The meeting at the Presidential Palace was attended by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeadis, the President of the Larnaca District Self-Government Organization, Angelos Hadjicharalambous, the Mayor of Larnaca Andreas Vyras and the President of the Larnaca Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Nakis Antoniou.
According to Mr. Vyras' information, during the meeting at the Presidential Palace, the following were agreed:
-The overall implementation of the project to be undertaken by the Cyprus Ports Authority.
-As far as the port is concerned, it was decided to upgrade it to a tourist and compatible commercial cargo facility, as a long-standing request of the city. The immediate priority is to upgrade the equipment for handling nuisance loads, with the aim of protecting the health and quality of life of citizens.
-Regarding the marina, it was decided to upgrade and expand it, with the capacity to accommodate about 200 boats.
-The development of land space, covering an area of at least 50,000 square meters, for urban uses is promoted, in accordance with the development planning and the needs of the city.
The central goal remains the unification of the coastal front of Larnaca. Mr. Vyras also informed that the Cyprus Ports Authority is expected to present by June 30, 2026 to the Larnaca City and District Development Committee a specific roadmap for the implementation of the above.
As pointed out, the Cyprus Ports Authority has assured that there are the necessary resources available for the implementation of the project. At the same time, it was underlined that the whole process will proceed in full coordination and cooperation with the competent bodies of the city. For this reason, a Technical Monitoring Committee has already been set up with the participation of the State, the Cyprus Ports Authority and local bodies, with the mission of clarifying the basic parameters that will be taken into account for the promotion of the architectural competition for the preparation of the master plan, as well as the organization and completion of the relevant process.
