HISTORICAL DOCUMENTATION CENTRE - A NEW LOOK IN THE CENTRE OF PAPHOS

HISTORICAL DOCUMENTATION CENTRE - A NEW LOOK IN THE CENTRE OF PAPHOS - Filenews 4/5 by Dora Christodoulou

Although the project seems to fall under those for which, after the dramatic developments with the suspended Mayor of Paphos, investigations are now being carried out on the part of the Ministry of the Interior and the Audit Office, nevertheless "on the ground" the projects for its completion are in their final development.

The works in the most central part of Paphos for the conversion of the old Paphos Police Directorate into a Historical Documentation Center are nearing completion and the listed building that until a few years ago housed the central police station on the central Kennedy Square and the surrounding area that have been converted into a construction site in recent years, are slowly taking shape in their final shape, giving a different look to Kennedy Square and the central avenues Griva Digeni and Evagoras Pallikaridis that surround it.

The works cost almost €10 million, the project has been carried out for 15 months and includes the renovation of the outdoor areas with an area of 18,000 square meters and the maintenance and conversion of the listed building of the former central police station, with an area of 950 square meters. For this purpose, a special museological study was carried out by a team of experts.

With the implementation and operation of the project, an attempt is also made to connect the urban environment with the history of the city through a walking route that will start from the north of the area under construction where the Armenian Genocide Park is located and a leisurely route with above-ground and ground-floor passages through areas with lush vegetation. The visitor will arrive at the urban square north of the building, which will include urban equipment, seating areas and sanitary areas.

From there, the visitor will enter the museum space, through a modern building, where he will learn the history of Paphos from 332 BC to modern times. This tour will be done both through exhibits that are already gathered and through a digital tour.

For almost two years now, following a relevant appeal by the Municipality of Paphos to the citizens who hold written documents for historical landmarks of the city, many documents largely unknown to most people have been gathered at the Center. The collection and exhibition of relics from events and periods that were a milestone in the history of Paphos, is a primary pursuit of the inspirers of the project and is already emerging as an aspect for which they have shown strong interest from the citizens and organized groups of Paphos from the first moment.
