The European Union's energy ministers are discussing the introduction of a tax on the excess profits of energy companies, which resulted from the energy price increases that followed the outbreak of the war in Iran. During the discussions, the Greek Deputy Minister of Energy, Nikos Tagaras, said that the EU is considering possible measures that could be taken to deal with the excess profits created by price increases due to geopolitical crises.
Spain's Energy Minister, Sarah Angesen, said, according to Reuters, that five EU countries, including Spain, support the imposition of such a tax. This proposal has sparked intense debate in the EU, as governments try to find ways to limit the effects of the energy crisis without further damaging the economy.
The decision on the issue is expected to be made during the meeting of EU energy ministers, which will take place on Thursday in Nicosia.
