A 64-year-old woman was the victim of online fraud, who complained today to the Nicosia Police Department that she was deceived, as a result of which a sum of €39.000 was extorted from her.

According to her complaint, the case began in September 2024, when through a social media platform, she met a person who presented herself as a financial advisor and investor.

The alleged investor persuaded the complainant to transfer a total of €10,000, allegedly for investment purposes.

The complainant was then informed that her investments had generated significant profits and that her initial capital had been multiplied.

But when she asked to withdraw her money, she was told that incorrect account details had been entered and that she had to pay another €5,000 to correct the bank details.

This demand aroused her suspicions and cut off communication with them. However, shortly afterwards she was contacted by two other persons, who presented themselves as a lawyer and an inspector of the Federal Financial Services Supervisory Authority, claiming that they could help her recover her money.

The complainant was persuaded again and proceeded with new money transfers, paying an additional €29,000.

To date, according to the complaint, no amount of money has been returned to her.

The examinations continue from the TAE of Nicosia.

A 24-year-old Greek Cypriot was also handcuffed by the Larnaca Police in connection with the unprecedented incident in which a vehicle dragged a pensioner on the Larnaca-Airport highway.

The vehicle in question last Wednesday dragged a 65-year-old Briton after a car accident, carrying him on the windscreen of his car for a distance of more than 2 kilometers. The issue became known after a shocking video that saw the light of day. After evaluating specific information, the Police arrested yesterday afternoon a 29-year-old man from Greece, who is alleged to be the person who rented the specific vehicle. He, however, claimed that he was not driving the vehicle at the time of the incident but the 24-year-old, who was arrested at dawn on Tuesday. So far, it has not been clarified which of the two was driving the vehicle, which will become clear through reconnaissance factions and the statements that will be taken. Both, however, will be brought before the Larnaca District Court for the issuance of detention orders.

The reason why the driver of the vehicle left the scene remains, so far, unknown. It is recalled that the incident took place on the road between the roundabouts of Rizoelia and Kalo Chorio, in Larnaca. According to the Police, after a traffic collision, the 65-year-old driver approached the second vehicle in order to exchange data. A little later, a police patrol arrived at the scene.

At the sight of the patrol car, the driver of the second vehicle developed speed and tried to escape. The 65-year-old tried to stop him, as a result of which he ended up on the windscreen of the vehicle, while it was moving on the highway. At some point he fell on the road and was slightly injured, while the driver of the rental car went up in smoke.
