USA - END TO TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF SANCTIONS ON RUSSIAN OIL - Filenews 16/4
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent clarified on Wednesday that Washington will not extend the temporary suspension of sanctions on Russian oil stored in ship tanks at sea.
As he stated during a press conference, "We will not renew the license for Russian oil."
The decision is part of the overall US policy to maintain pressure on Russia's energy revenues, as part of the sanctions imposed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The US Treasury had announced a day earlier a similar decision for Iranian oil in the sea.
Washington is using sanctions against Russia's and Iran's energy resources to curb their state revenues. In the case of Moscow, the measure is linked to the war in Ukraine, while in the case of Tehran it is linked to the continuation of its nuclear program and support for organizations such as Hezbollah in Lebanon.
In March, however, the US had issued temporary licenses for the sale of oil from the two countries that was already at sea, in an attempt to limit the sharp rise in oil prices due to the war in the Middle East.
