The effort to locate mobile phones entering the cells is unstoppable, since devices are found almost daily, with prisoners inventing new ways to deceive the staff, while drugs are also in high demand. In the last 15 days, 15 mobile phones were found, with convicts discovering holes in the security system, but also the prison management being on alert, removing them and initiating the relevant procedures on the basis of laws and regulations.

Although it is not an easy task to put mobile phones in prisons, it seems from the confiscations that this does not deter prisoners, who either buy them on the black market, or recruit their own people, risking even imprisonment. Recently, the possession and importation of mobile phones into the Central Prisons has been criminalized and anyone found to be supplying a prisoner with a telephone device, or if found in his possession, then he is subject to a fine or imprisonment of up to one year.

According to information from "F", about 15 days ago, two brand new mobile phones were found in their packages, in a waste basket outside the closed prison. As it turned out, a visitor left them after consultation there, so that the prisoners who would collect the garbage could pick them up and transport them inside the closed prison. The mobile phones were received by the Police for examinations and to show where and who they were bought from so that an effort can be made to identify the citizen involved.

Also, in searches of staff members in a wing, four mobile phones were found, two in one cell, one in another and the 4th in the toilet flush. Also, on Holy Wednesday, after another search, a mobile phone and four chargers were found in a toilet cistern in another wing. In another case, a mother visited her son who is a prisoner and apparently, during the farewell she gave him a mobile phone. The prisons had investigated the specific woman  and did not know that she was carrying a mobile phone. When the visiting hours ended and her detained son was searched, the mobile phone was found in his possession and confiscated.

On April 5, checks were carried out by staff members in four wings and six mobile phones were found in four cells. On April 7, during a search of a prisoner's clothes carried by a relative, a small amount of drugs was found. In a subsequent search of his cell, a mobile phone was also found. Finally, a woman who visited her partner, during his visit, gave him glues impregnated with a narcotic substance. The investigation of the case was undertaken by YKAN. Criminal files are opened for all cases and those involved, when there is testimony, are brought to justice.

Today in prisons there is a mobile phone signal detection system, while actions are being taken to extend it to its cut-off, so that any attempt to activate a mobile phone does not succeed.

Knews
A Greek Cypriot man has been sentenced to two months in prison by a ''court'' in the occupied Nicosia after being found in possession of drugs at a crossing point.

According to court proceedings, the incident occurred on the evening of February 12, 2026, at the Ayios Dhometios crossing. ''Officers'' from the occupied areas' anti-narcotics unit carried out a search of the man’s vehicle and reportedly discovered approximately 3.5 grams of a substance believed to be cocaine, along with a precision scale. The items were seized as evidence.

The man, who had crossed into the occupied areas as a visitor, was initially detained for 10 days while investigations were conducted. He was later held in custody pending trial.

He was found guilty of illegal importation and possession of narcotics.

In its sentencing, the ''court'' stated it followed established judicial guidelines. While noting that the quantity involved was small, it emphasized the seriousness of the substance in question. The ''court'' weighed the limited amount as a mitigating factor, while treating the type of drug as an aggravating element.

The defendant’s admission of guilt and reported health condition, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, were also taken into account before the ''court'' imposed a two-month prison sentence.
