In his statements at the scene of the accident, the Assistant Head of the Limassol Traffic Police, Emilios Kafas, said, "unfortunately, today (yesterday) we had a new fatal car accident in Limassol. Specifically, a vehicle driven by a professional driver hit a pedestrian, who was trying to cross the road. As a result of the collision, the pedestrian died instantly and was taken to the Limassol Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The driver of the vehicle involved was subjected to a preliminary alcohol test with a zero indication and a drug test with a negative indication. The Police continue the examinations to determine the causes and exact circumstances of the accident."

Answering a question about whether there was a pedestrian crossing at the site, Mr. Kafas confirmed that there was none, noting, however, that there was satisfactory lighting in the area. "All the evidence will be studied with some other testimonies that we are trying to secure, in order to ascertain the exact circumstances of the accident," he added.

The Court of Appeal rejected the appeals of three of the four defendants in a high-profile drug case, upholding the decision of the Larnaca District Court to detain them until the trial, while accepting the appeal of one of the defendants, who is expected to be released on parole. The defendants will be brought to a direct trial before the Larnaca Criminal Court on April 29, 2026.

The defendants face serious charges related to drug trafficking, including conspiracy to commit a felony, supply and possession of cocaine and cannabis for the purpose of supply to third parties, as well as possession of equipment for drug trafficking. In addition, one of the defendants faces a charge of money laundering.

The Court of First Instance had ordered the detention of all the accused, ruling that there was a risk of evasion of justice, while for two of them it also found a risk of committing new offenses. The Court of Appeal agreed with this assessment, pointing out that the existence of a risk of re-offending is an independent reason for detention.

Rejecting the defendants' claims, the Court stressed that proof or certainty is not required to establish a risk of committing new offences, but it is sufficient to create a strong impression on the basis of the evidence before it. He also noted that pending cases of similar offences can be taken into account as indications of a propensity towards such behaviour, without violating the presumption of innocence.

The Court of Appeal also rejected the allegations of violation of the European Convention on Human Rights, holding that the Court of First Instance did not rely on general or stereotypical references, but made an individual assessment of the facts of the case. At the same time, it considered that the burden of proof was not transferred to the defendants and that the principle of proportionality was observed.

As far as the fourth defendant is concerned, the Court of Appeal differentiated, finding weaknesses in the evidence that connects him to the case. He considered that conditions could be imposed in his case instead of detention, taking into account his ties with Cyprus and his personal circumstances.

On the contrary, for the other defendants, the Court ruled that the witness material, combined with the seriousness of the offences and the circumstances of the case, justified their detention until the trial. Particular reference was also made to the fact that the voluntary surrender of an accused to the Police is not in itself a decisive factor for removing the risk of evasion of justice.

In conclusion, the Court of Appeal rejected the appeals of the three defendants and upheld the detention orders against them, while accepting the appeal of the fourth, annulling the first instance decision and paving the way for his release with restrictive conditions to be determined at a later stage.
