Increased incidents of burglaries and thefts have recently been recorded in the area of the Baths of Aphrodite, causing great concern to residents and property owners. As reported, the perpetrators act undisturbed, even in residences where tourists live.

Enhanced measures have already been put in place, which include night surveillance, increased patrols, targeted checks and searches of suspicious persons and vehicles, Paphos Police said.

Owners who are active in short-term rentals report that there have been burglaries with tenants inside the houses, which affects both their sense of security and their professional credibility. At the same time, they talk about financial damage, as visitors proceed with cancellations, negative reviews and refund requests.

Residents of the area express dissatisfaction with the lack of effective actions, claiming that there is organized action of burglars in the wider area, from Pomos to the Baths of Aphrodite. Testimonies speak of repeated incidents, even in the same residence, intensifying the feeling of insecurity.

The Paphos Police confirms the outbreak of the incidents, with the Assistant Police Director of Operations and Spokesperson of ADE Paphos, Michalis Nikolaou, stating that recently there has been increased burglary activity mainly in residences in the area.

As he mentioned, enhanced measures have already been implemented, which include night surveillance, increased patrols, targeted checks and searches of suspicious persons and vehicles.

Despite the efforts, so far no specific results or arrests have emerged, however, as he underlined, the operations will continue and will be intensified with the aim of both solving the cases and preventing new incidents.

He made special reference to the fact that in several cases the burglars managed to enter houses without obvious traces of violation, which suggests that there were probably unguarded windows or other openings. At the same time, he noted that in some complaints the stolen goods were limited to small amounts of money, which strengthens the appreciation for opportunistic and systematic action.

On the part of the Local Authority, the Mayor of Polis Chrysochous, Yiotis Papachristofi, confirmed the existence of the problem, pointing out that the area of the Baths of Aphrodite faces similar phenomena from time to time.

As he stated, the Municipal Council has already taken a decision to install a surveillance system with cameras in selected places, which are considered vulnerable or show increased mobility.

The process of securing the necessary permits is ongoing, with him expressing optimism that it will soon be completed so that the implementation can begin.

He also stressed that the Municipality is determined to proceed with the installation of the system regardless of the cost, considering the measure necessary to enhance security, prevent criminal acts and restore a sense of security for both residents and visitors to the area.
