The Minister of the Interior and the Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy announced on Wednesday (11/03) the sending of notifications through the SafeCY application in the event of a security incident, as an additional measure of timely information to citizens. In fact, during the announcement of the new service, a video was presented which explains how citizens can install the application on their mobile phones and how exactly it will work.
He pointed out that "the notification through SafeCY is an additional way of informing citizens in a timely manner, which addresses the weakness of the text message (SMS) measure, due to the fact that it works based on the address that each subscriber has declared to his telephone provider and not on the location in which he is currently located".
Continuing, the Minister acknowledged that this measure does not cover citizens who have not installed the SafeCY application on their mobile phone or do not have a smartphone, however, he reiterated that this is an additional measure that can cover a very large number of citizens, until the completion of the implementation process of the Early Warning System.
In conclusion, Mr. Ioannou stressed the commitment and political will of the Government to implement targeted actions to address and correct the weaknesses that have been identified both with the issue of shelters and with the Early Warning System. "These actions are part of the clear political will and our strategic planning for the evolution of civil defense into a modern and integrated civil protection system. The central objective is the effective protection of citizens, the strengthening of the resilience of the population and the more effective response of the State to emergencies", underlined, finally, the Minister of the Interior.
