PAPHOS DAMS - THIRD OVERFLOW AND SIGNIFICANT INCREASE FROM LAST YEAR

PAPHOS DAMS - THIRD OVERFLOW AND SIGNIFICANT INCREASE FROM LAST YEAR - Filenews 27/3 by Dora Christodoulou

While a third dam is expected to overflow in the province of Paphos within the day, the water balance in the province has now been modified upwards for good compared to the same period last year, causing feelings of relief to producers and citizens.

The third small dam in the province, that of Agia Marina Chrysochous, is now marginally full, with the current occupancy of the Water Department's bulletin showing a rate of 98.7% and as a result it is considered a given overflow in the coming hours. This was preceded by the overflows of the other two small dams of the Chrysochous district, in Argaka and Pomos.

At the same time, the occupancy of all the dams of Paphos and the comparison with the corresponding day last year, demonstrates an unexpected improvement in the situation a few months ago.

Indicatively, in the second largest dam in Cyprus, that of Asprokremmos, the occupancy rate is now 32.6% compared to 25.4% last year. In Kannaviou the occupancy has now risen to 42% compared to 26.6% last year on this day, while in Mavrokolympos, which was empty due to a breakdown last year, today the water level has risen to 73.9%.

In the Chrysochous apartment we have two overflowing dams and a third that is overflowing in the immediate future, while last year no overflow was recorded. In the largest dam in the area, that of Evretos, the occupancy is currently at 38% compared to 24.9% last year.

These data, even if, as the authorities warn, they do not solve the serious water problem of Cyprus, they do not cease to be a positive development for the situation and in combination with the repair of the damage to the Mavrokolimbos dams and the permanent desalination plant of Kouklia from the 2024 fire, create a climate of optimism in Paphos for next summer, especially given that the rains and flows in the dams continue during this period.
