NEW SCAM - THEY PRETENDED TO BE GESY AND EXTRACTED €10,000 FROM A BANK ACCOUNT - Filenews 19/3
The Police are investigating a new case of online fraud and theft of a sum of money, by perpetrators who send messages allegedly from the General Health System - GESY, with the aim of extracting money from citizens' bank accounts.
According to a complaint submitted today to the TAE Limassol, the complainant received on November 17, 2025, a message on his mobile phone, with the sender allegedly appearing to be the GESY. The message stated that his profile on the GHS needs updating and referred him to an online page.
The complainant visited this website, where he was asked to enter his bank account details, allegedly for the payment of a sum of €10, in order to be allowed to proceed with the renewal of his profile. After registering the data, the perpetrators extracted a sum of money amounting to €10,010 from his bank account, as a result of which the complainant found that he had been deceived.
The case is being investigated by the Financial Crime Investigation Office, of the Limassol Police Department.
As a measure to protect against such online scams, the Police draw the attention of citizens, especially when they receive messages containing electronic links. It is recommended that the public avoid following such electronic links and that they never report or register their personal and bank details on unknown websites.
It is also recommended that, before any online transaction or payment, citizens proceed to a relevant verification, through the notified communication channels of the organizations or companies that may be involved. In case citizens have declared their bank data, through such messages, they should immediately inform their banking institution, to prevent their illegal use.
