IN THE 'HUNT' FOR LAMPRATZIA - MORE THAN 10 ARRESTS BEFORE EASTER EVEN APPROACHES IN LIMASSOL - PARENTS OF MINORS ARE ALSO TARGETED - Filenews 10/3 by Ioanna Mantziipa

The Police and the Fire Service in Limassol have dynamically entered the hunt for lampreys, as the phenomenon shows an increasing trend as Easter approaches. An operational plan has already been drawn up at the Limassol Police Department, while strict measures have been taken to deal with the extremely dangerous traditional custom of "lambratzia", which in recent years has caused serious problems in the city and the province.

As "F" is informed, in a period of less than ten days, the Police in Limassol made more than ten arrests of young people for lighting a fire and nuisance, as part of the efforts to combat the phenomenon. At the same time, young people have already started collecting wood and other materials in various areas to light 'lamps', while incidents of nuisance have been recorded in some neighbourhoods.

At the same time, in addition to minors, mainly under the age of 16, their parents will also face the law since cases will be opened against them for inadequate control of their children. Two cases have already been filed against parents, after their minor children were found to be violating the relevant legislation.

Stone-throwing of firefighters in Polemidia

A serious incident took place on Sunday afternoon in Polemidia. The Fire Service received a call for a fire in a pile of wood and waste materials in the courtyard of the church of Agios Nikolaos. During the extinguishing, members of the Fire Brigade, as well as the fire truck, were stoned by unknown young persons. The Police were called to the scene and upon their arrival the young people fled. The incident caused damage to the fire truck.

Condemnation by trade unions

In a joint statement, the PASYDY and SYPYK unions condemned the attack on members of the Fire Service on Sunday in Polemidia. As stated in the announcement, the two organizations ask the competent authorities to immediately investigate the case and identify the young people involved in the incident, while they are waiting for their criminal prosecution and the imposition of exemplary sentences.

"It is widely accepted that the profession has difficulty dealing with such unpredictable attacks that make the danger of the profession of firefighter more and more intense when he is even stoned by brainless people while extinguishing a fire," it is noted elsewhere in the announcement.

The trade unions emphasize that such actions are unacceptable and condemnable and call on the state to take all necessary measures to prevent and effectively deal with such antisocial phenomena.
