The Police arrested a 33-year-old man yesterday, to facilitate investigations into an investigated case of illegal possession of drugs for the purpose of supplying another person, causing concern, assault on a police officer and resisting legal arrest.

Around 7.30 p.m. yesterday, members of the Police, who were on patrol in Limassol, signalled to a cyclist to stop for a check. As soon as the cyclist noticed the police, he tried to escape. In this attempt, he fell off his bicycle and continued running.

Members of the Police managed to stop him nearby. Then he attacked and pushed the police, who, however, managed to immobilize him and arrest him for the spontaneous offenses of causing concern, disturbing the peace and attacking a police officer.

From a subsequent check, it was found that he is a 33-year-old man, in whose possession 26 packages of cannabis (20 grams), 19 packages of methamphetamine (9 grams) and a sum of money of €442 were found.

The 33-year-old was re-arrested for the self-inflicted crime of illegal possession of drugs for the purpose of supplying to another person. The 33-year-old was subsequently taken into custody to facilitate investigations. YKAN and the Agios Ioannis Police Station continue the examinations.

The Famagusta Police are conducting investigations in many directions in relation to the attempted murder of a 34-year-old nightclub owner in Protaras. So far the motives of the perpetrators have not been clarified, however it is considered certain that they set up a death trap for the 34-year-old, who was not injured by the shots that hit his vehicle. The investigators of the case are looking for who the young man, who is a person known to the authorities, had differences with.

Information states that in the burned vehicle left behind by the perpetrators, a pistol and a magazine were found, which have been burned and have been put under the microscope of the Police. The Police are also examining closed surveillance circuits from the Pernera area in an attempt to identify the movements of the vehicle, in which the two perpetrators were riding. As it was found, the vehicle had been declared stolen by its owner, who is located in Nicosia.

The attempted murder was committed ten minutes after midnight on Protaras-Cape Greco Avenue, despite the Pernera traffic lights. 0 A 34-year-old man had just left his nightclub and was heading in a left-hand drive hummer car to Cape Greco. The perpetrators were hiding in a field and as soon as the 34-year-old's vehicle approached the traffic lights, one of them started shooting at him. The victim's car stopped a few meters away, with him fleeing on foot, after finding, as he said, that the perpetrators were following him. The 34-year-old found refuge in his nightclub, located 200 meters away.

The perpetrators then got into a car and left the scene. 35 minutes later, the Police of the British Bases of Dhekelia received information about a burning vehicle in a field in Xylofagou. The vehicle was located near the Ayia Napa-Rizoelia highway, at the exit leading to Larnaca. The fire was extinguished, but the car managed to turn into ashes. What is speculated is that either they had hidden another vehicle in the area in which they escaped, or another person was waiting for them in a car.

In the Pernera area, examinations were carried out by members of the Famagusta Police Directorate and the forensic department of the Police Headquarters. As it was established, the bullets that hit the 34-year-old's car were at least four, while 9mm shell casings were found at the scene. Searches of the burned vehicle were carried out by police officers of the British Bases

The Court of Appeal rejected the appeals of three convicted for a serious drug trafficking case, largely upholding the first-instance decision of the Limassol Criminal Court, with the only difference being the reduction of the sentence of one of the defendants due to failure to calculate the pre-trial detention period.

The case concerned four persons, of which the three appellants were found guilty of conspiracy to commit a felony and possession and possession for the purpose of supplying cocaine with a total weight of more than 500 grams. According to the findings of the court of first instance, the defendants had coordinated action, met in an isolated area in Limassol and proceeded to separate and package the substance, using equipment such as precision scales and nylon bags.

During the intervention of the Police, the accused tried to escape, while one of them grabbed a quantity of cocaine and threw it during the chase. The Criminal Court relied on the testimony of police officers, scientific evidence and factual testimony to conclude their guilt.

The Court of Appeal, in a unanimous decision, rejected the appellants' claims that no joint possession or conspiracy had been proven. He considered that the overall assessment of the testimony safely led to the conclusion of guilt, noting that the actions and coordination of the defendants could not be explained in any other logical way.

The allegations of mis-assessment of testimony, abuse of procedure and violation of the right to a fair trial, as well as the allegation of entrapment by an informant, were also rejected. The Court held that there had been no unlawful incitement and that the defendants' positions were not supported by evidence.

Regarding the sentences, the Court of Appeal ruled that they were not excessive, taking into account the seriousness of the offences and the large amount of cocaine. He stressed that drug-related offenses are a social scourge and require dissuasive penalties, especially when it comes to possession for the purpose of supply.

He also rejected the arguments of unequal treatment between the defendants, explaining that the differentiation in the sentence of one of them was justified by health problems and other mitigating factors accepted at first instance.

However, the Court of Appeal found an omission in the calculation of the pre-trial detention period for one of the appellants and ordered that the period during which he was detained in 2020 be deducted from his sentence.

As a result, the appeals were dismissed in their entirety, with the first-instance decision almost entirely upheld, confirming the multi-year prison sentences imposed on the convicts.
