CLASSICAL MUSIC
Markideion Municipal Theatre, Paphos
15 April - 7pm
Free entry
The Concert Series of the Municipality of Pafos, part of its
new programme of thematic cultural events, continues with a second concert
dedicated to classical music.
The Municipality of Pafos presents the eighteen-year-old pianist Anna Avraamidou, one of the most promising young musicians of Cyprus. She will be joined by the distinguished flutist Savvas Christodoulou on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 7:00 p.m., at the Markideio Municipal Theatre.
Anna Avraamidou has already established an impressive
presence, with international distinctions across Europe and the United States
and appearances on important concert stages. Since the age of 14, she has been
studying at the Purcell School for Young Musicians, and she has been awarded a
full tuition scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she
will begin her studies this coming September. Her achievements include the
Grand Prix at the International Franz Liszt Competition in Weimar, distinction
at the Cooper International Competition 2025 in the United States, and the
Young Critic Award at the Clara Haskil Competition. She is also a scholarship
recipient of the A.G. Leventis Foundation.
The concert programme presents a rich and varied selection
of works, highlighting both expressive depth and virtuosity. The elegance of
Suite op.34 by Charles-Marie Widor and the imaginative, multi-layered character
of Carnaval op.9 by Robert Schumann are complemented by the contemporary work
Hypnosis by Ian Clarke, which explores the expressive possibilities of the
flute through modern techniques. The programme concludes with the virtuosic
Fantaisie Brillante sur Carmen by François Borne, based on themes from the
opera Carmen, offering a brilliant and compelling finale.

A few words about the musicians
Born in 2008 in Cyprus to parents of the Greek diaspora,
pianist Anna Avraamidou was recognised from an early age for her
exceptional musical talent, demonstrating remarkable technical ability and
musical maturity beyond her years.
She gave her first piano recital at the age of nine, and one
year later made her debut with the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra and the
Orpheus Chamber Orchestra in Vienna. In March 2020, at the age of 12, she made
her debut with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. Since then, she has given
numerous recitals in Cyprus and abroad and was re-invited by the Cyprus Youth
Symphony Orchestra to perform in The Nutcracker, in collaboration with the
Nicosia Youth Ballet at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre.
In 2021, she participated in the winners’ concert of the
International “Euplayy” Competition at the Brunnenhof of the Munich Residenz,
where she was awarded First Prize.
She gained wide international recognition in November 2023
following her triumph at the 6th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition
for Young Pianists in Weimar, where she won First Prize in Category II as well
as the Grand Prix for her outstanding performances throughout the competition.
She also received the Liszt Prize, the Classical Sonata Prize, the EMCY Prize,
and the Junior Jury Prize. She was the youngest finalist in her category, and
the jury noted that her performance elevated the overall level of the
competition.
In recognition of her success, the High Commission of Cyprus
in the United Kingdom organized a piano recital in her honour in February 2024
at the Cyprus House in London. In 2025, she was distinguished at the Cooper
Competition and received the Young Critic Award at the Clara Haskil
Competition.
She has appeared as a soloist with the Thessaloniki State
Symphony Orchestra performing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, in a
collaboration between the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and the Cyprus Youth
Symphony Orchestra performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue, with the Commandaria
Orchestra at Pattihio Theatre Limassol and Pallas Theatre Nicosia, and with the
Limassol Municipality Symphony Orchestra performing Grieg’s Piano Concerto. She
has also given recitals in Weimar, at the Barletta Piano Festival in Italy, at
the International Nicosia Festival, within the Leeds International Concert
Season, at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, at the Hinchingbrooke
Performing Arts Centre, at Clarendon Muse, and at Pushkin House in London.
She began piano lessons at the age of five at Musica Mundana
Conservatory under Mariola Charitidou. She has participated in masterclasses
with renowned pianists including Mikhail Voskresensky, Boris Petrushansky,
Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Marios Papadopoulos, and Ludmila Berlinskaya. Since
September 2022, she has been studying at the Purcell School under Tessa
Nicholson. She has been a Leverhulme Trust scholar (2022–2023) and is a
recipient of the A.G. Leventis Foundation scholarship for the third consecutive
year.
She has secured a full tuition scholarship at the Royal
Academy of Music in London, where she will begin her studies this September.
Savvas Christodoulou was born in Limassol and began flute lessons at a young
age. In 2005, he was admitted to the Prague State Conservatory, from which he
graduated in 2010. The same year, he continued his studies at the Utrecht
Conservatory under the internationally renowned flutist Aldo Baerten, while
also studying Baroque performance with Wilbert Hazelzet. In 2012, he obtained
his Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance and Education with highest
distinction, and in 2015 he completed his Master of Music in Stage Performance,
receiving outstanding reviews.
From 1999 to 2004, he was a member of the Cyprus Youth
Symphony Orchestra and was appointed principal flute in 2001. He has also
performed with the symphony orchestras of the Prague and Utrecht
conservatories.
He has appeared in solo recitals and chamber music concerts in the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece, and Cyprus.
