BARRAGE OF CHECKS BY TOM - 14 COMPLAINTS OF TAXI DRIVERS AND HEAVY FINES FOR ILLEGAL TRANSPORT OF PASSENGERS IN PRIVATE VEHICLES - Filenews 27/3
Intensive inspections to tackle illegal passenger transport and ensure the safety of the passenger public were carried out during the week of 16–22 March 2026 in the Districts of Larnaca and Nicosia by the Supervisors Branch and the Auditors Branch of the Department of Road Transport, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.
In Nicosia, a total of 120 taxis (urban, rural and intercity) were checked, of which 14 vehicles were reported for various offenses.
At the same time, on March 20, 2026, targeted checks were carried out on eight private vehicles at Larnaca Airport. Testimony emerged for two vehicles, while three violation notices were issued to two drivers and a company, totalling €8.250.
The illegal transport of passengers in private vehicles is carried out without the required insurance coverage and by unlicensed drivers, exposing passengers to serious risks and overcharges.
The Department of Road Transport continues with systematic and targeted inspections to ensure legality in the industry and the protection of passengers.
Recommendations to the public
The Department of Road Transport invites passengers to:
- Use only licensed taxis with a taximeter and the required insurance coverage.
- Not to use private vehicles for passenger transport for a fee.
- Report to the competent authorities (email: roadtransport@rtd.mcw.gov.cy) any suspicious cases of illegal transport.
Citizens' cooperation makes an essential contribution to ensuring legality and protecting the safety of passengers.
