The Department of Road Transport, Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, informs the public about the progress of recalls of defective airbags.
Defective airbag recalls
In February 2025, 81,060 vehicles with defective airbags were detected in Cyprus, which were recalled for road safety reasons. Of these, 5,271 vehicle owners have not proceeded with replacement, as a result of which their certificate of suitability has been suspended, in accordance with the legislation.
For the vehicles detected in February 2025, the Department has implemented the prescribed control and suspension measures in their entirety.
In the period March – December 2025, 19,929 vehicles with a defective airbag were detected. Of these, 3,216 vehicles have not implemented the recall so far. Part of these vehicles has already been immobilized, either due to the manufacturer's instruction for immediate immobilization, or due to the expiration of the eight-month time limit given for the completion of the airbag replacement, while for the rest the prescribed limit for replacement still applies.
With the aim of defending road safety, the Department of Road Transport calls on companies to intensify their efforts for the rapid supply of components and service to citizens. At the same time, it again calls on those vehicle owners who have not yet responded, to act for an immediate replacement of the defective airbag.
The Department of Road Transport and the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works recall the recommendation of non-use given from the beginning in the cases of vehicles that were under recall due to a defective airbag, until the replacement of the component. The recall is an essential measure for road safety, prevents serious hazards and protects the lives of drivers, passengers and third parties.
