One of Russia's largest airports, Moscow's Domodedovo, has been re-privatized and sold to a company that manages the country's busiest airport, Sheremetyevo, which is majority-owned by TPS Avia Holding which moved from Cyprus back to Russia in 2022.
In June, a Russian court ruled to nationalize and transfer ownership of Domodedovo, the country's fourth busiest airport.
The court found that its two owners, Dmitry Kamencik and Valery Kogan, were foreign residents who had no right to manage this asset.
Sheremetyevo, "represented by its 100% subsidiary Perspektiva LLC, and Bank PSB PJSC announce the signing of an agreement for the sale of Domodedovo Airport," a press release said.
The airport was sold on the second attempt for about $850 million – almost half of the original price of $1.6 billion.
Sheremetyevo is majority-owned by the private company TPS Avia Holding and the Russian government, which owns a 30% stake, according to Russian business media RBC.
TPS Avia Holding was moved from Cyprus back to Russia in 2022, and Russian media quoted Arkady Rotenberg, a close associate of President Vladimir Putin, among the company's shareholders.
Billions of dollars worth of assets have been seized by the Russian state since Russia sent troops into Ukraine in 2022, including those owned by Western companies such as French dairy group Danone and German energy company Uniper.
Moscow argues that the nationalizations are fair and correct failed privatizations carried out during the fall of the Soviet Union in the 1990s, but critics say they have prevented long-term investment in Russia.
