SWIMMING POOLS ARE HIDDEN FROM ELECTRICAL CONTROL AND LIVES ARE THREATENED

Filenews 12 February 2026 - by Vassos Vassiliou

Electricians "hide swimming pools" from the required control of electrical installations, which endangers human lives.

This emerges from what he said before the Parliamentary Committee on Interior, not just any random person but the president of the Electricians himself, Mr. Giorgos Kyriakou.

From what Mr. Kyriakou said, it also appears that there is a gap in the control process, but no further control measures are taken, even if the existence of a swimming pool is detected by the competent inspector.

Mr. Giorgos Kyriakou also stated the following: An owner installs a 4 kilowatt single-phase mechanism that is prohibited and the electrician/electrical engineer says that "I will not show it" (for inspection purposes). The citizen builds a swimming pool of €30,000 and it is there and the facilities are not visible in the plans (because they are removed) as a result of which they are not controlled by the Electricity Authority, which endangers our customers and the people in general.

The inspector who conducts the inspection sees the gap and asks the electrician if he removed the installations from the plans so that they are not checked and he replies "yes, I am entitled". Unfortunately, he is entitled, said Mr. Kyriakou.

When there is a swimming pool in the plans and they are not checked, a building permit should not be issued, said Mr. Georgiou.

The relevant references were made during a discussion of regulations based on which the mandatory supervision of electromechanical installation works in new buildings or buildings that are being renovated is institutionalized.

The chairman of the Interior Committee, Aristos Damianou, referred to an important development which strengthens the control process and allows Cyprus to harmonize with the provisions of the European acquis. As he said, the aim of the audit promoted is to address safety issues as well as the effective use of electrical and mechanical installations.

The president of ETEK, Konstantinos Konstanti, said that this is a historic day in the sense that a legislative gap that has existed for 20 years is being corrected.

Mr. Konstantis also stated the following:

"The mandatory supervision of electrical works is institutionalized, a very important work in the construction industry which ensures the public interest in matters of safety and proper monitoring of the projects being erected. That is, there should be mandatory supervision by both the architect and the military engineer and the electrician and the mechanical engineer."
