PAPHOS MUNICIPALITY PARALYSED

 Pafos Live 3 February 2026

The meeting of the Paphos Municipal Council was not held yesterday afternoon either, in the midst of the developments related to the Mayor Phaedon Phedonos. The specific meeting of the tenders council and the plenary session of the body was scheduled for the previous week, but it had been postponed after the complaints and allegations against Phaedon Phedonos.

The mayor of Paphos reconvened the body yesterday afternoon, but a few hours before the session, the deputy mayor of Paphos, the municipal groups of DIKO and EDEK, the municipal councillor of ELAM, one of the two councillors of DIPA and the municipal councillor of the "human city" movement sent a letter informing that they were not going to attend the session since the decision of the Ministry of the Interior is pending for the possible dismissal of the mayor from his duties.

The session began with a quorum of the mayor of Paphos, the eight municipal councillors of DISY, the four of AKEL, the municipal councillor of the movement for the salvation of Paphos and the second municipal councillor of DIPA.

At the beginning of the session, the Municipal Group of AKEL in a letter initially asked for the session to be postponed and then called on the Mayor to exclude himself from the work, until there is a decision from the Ministry of the Interior on whether or not it will be suspended. The request was not accepted and the AKEL team left, as a result of which the session was postponed since there was no longer a quorum.

It is noted that this session was originally set for January 26 and after consultation of all sides it was postponed for a week. The situation that has prevailed in recent days has caused embarrassment and upset not only among the citizens of the city of Paphos but also among the mechanism of the municipality. The postponed session was to deal not only with current issues of the municipality and the award of tenders for projects, but would also examine issues related to the organization of the two-day opera, as well as issues of the multipurpose center.

All sides agree that decisions should be made quickly by the Ministry of the Interior, which called again last night to speed up the procedures and clarify the whole issue as soon as possible.
