ELECTROMECHANICAL SERVICES - THIS IS DEADLINE FOR REPLACEMENT OF OLD SWITCHES - AN ESSENTIAL MEASURE THAT DIRECTLY ENHANCES ELECTRICAL SAFETY - Filenews 26/2

The Department of Electromechanical Services of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works informs that in some older electrical installations, built before 1990, the old type of central circuit breaker (voltmetric type) is still used, which does not meet modern standards and does not provide the required level of safety.

According to the Department, the replacement with a new type of protective switch (ammeter type) is a simple but essential measure that directly enhances electrical safety, while the compliance deadline is set for October 1, 2026.

After this date, it is stated, the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) can proceed with the interruption of electricity supply in cases of non-compliance, until the replacement is completed.

The Department of Electromechanical Services calls on owners to check whether their installation has the specific switch, noting that the cost of supplying and installing the new automatic systems is borne by the owner.

He clarifies that the replacement is carried out by a licensed electrical installation contractor and that the indicative cost of purchasing the device is approximately €60, not including the installation cost, while in apartment buildings where there is more than one such switch, the replacement is done as a whole and at the same time.

At the same time, it is stated that the control and surveillance of the process by the EAC and the Department of Electromechanical Services are provided free of charge until December 31, 2026, so that there is planning time.

It is added that the Ministry provides a €60 grant to consumers who are included in the EAC tariff 08, essentially covering the cost of the device, with a deadline for submitting applications on September 30, 2026.

For the sponsorship, those interested can submit an application with the EHR form 73.26, while more information is available on the website of the Department of Electromechanical Services, in the file "Voltage-type automata".
