Cyta will bet on a specific consumer profile, which covers a small part of the electricity market pie, when it enters the game of electricity supply from renewable energy sources (RES).
Before the Parliamentary Committee on Finance, which yesterday continued the discussion of the controversial bill, which allows Cyta to be active in energy, causing tremors in the EAC, Cyta President Maria Tsiakka referred to the Organization's strategy in the energy sector.
As he said, the Authority's strategy is targeted and clear, pointing out that it will offer energy from RES to consumers who do not have access to such solutions. According to Ms. Tsiakka, Cyta targets young couples who rent homes, people living in apartment buildings and small businesses that cannot install their own photovoltaics, due to the spaces where they are housed. He also said that the Organization will operate as an independent supplier with multiple partnerships.
However, Cyta is considering the possibility of offering innovative packages with energy, telecommunications and technological products.
And conventional energy from EAC
He also said that in case there is no sufficiency of RES electricity, conventional energy will be used that will be supplied by the EAC.
He indicated that the Organization wishes to have the same institutional treatment as other organizations, pointing out that since 2003 the EAC holds a license as a telecommunications service provider. It is worth noting that Ms. Tsiakka rejected the information that the Organization has been approached by Cyfield for cooperation, stressing that they do not intend to enter into partnerships with any conventional fuel energy producer.
EAC: Loss of 5,000 consumers
For his part, EAC President George Petrou said that the customers targeted by Cyta are residential consumers and EAC customers, whom the Electricity Authority will lose. According to Mr. Petrou, the EAC's production costs will rise (since it will lose customers) and will be passed on to the rest of its customers.
EPA: Closes the door to cooperation
The Consumer Protection Committee yesterday closed the door on a possible cooperation between Cyta and the EAC. The representative of the Committee, answering questions from MPs about the possible cooperation of the two legal entities under public law, said that "in such a case we will be talking about another game, we will not be talking about an open market", meaning that a state monopoly would be created.
The representative of the EPA also indicated that the entry of new players into the energy market will strengthen competition, innovation and consumer choices, in the context of the green transition.
On behalf of CERA, it was said that, due to the EAC's dominant position in the energy market, any possible cooperation between the two organizations should be considered on the basis of the terms and conditions of this cooperation.
The Commissioner for State Aid Control, Stella Michailidou, noted that there is nothing reprehensible in terms of state aid in case Cyta is active in energy.
EAC workers react
Cyta's intention to offer energy services is causing reactions from EAC employees, who also criticized the open invitation for cooperation addressed last week by the EAC president to the Telecommunications Authority. The president of EPOPAI, Kyriakos Tafounas, wondered what the state wants to do through Cyta, which the EAC cannot do. He also said that CERA granted licenses in the form of blank cheques to private individuals for photovoltaic parks or even conventional production and these individuals approached Cyta. A representative of ASTEPAIK argued that the required dialogue for the preparation of the bill was not preceded.
