The data for Cyprus in relation to births are discouraging, as Eurostat data show that our population is aging more and more. In fact, our country records the highest rate of aging in the last decade compared to other countries. One in five (18.3%) are over 65 years old.
In particular, it is reported that the average age of the population of the European Union has increased by 2.1 years in the last ten years, and from 42.8 to 44.9 years.

Population ageing was recorded in all countries except Germany and Malta, where they decreased by 0.4 years.
In contrast, Cyprus and Slovakia are at the top of the EU in terms of the rate of ageing, recording an increase of 4 years. This is followed by Italy (3.9 years), Greece and Poland (3.8 years), Portugal (3.7 years).
As for Cyprus' data, the average age rose from 37 years in 2015 to 41 years in 2025.
About one in five citizens is over 65 years old, with a rate of 18.3%. The percentage of people over 65 ten years old (2015) was 14.5%.

The opposite trend for young people, in children up to 14 years old, who amount to only 15.2% of the total population, while ten years ago it was 16.2%. The lowest percentage of children is recorded in Italy (11.9%) and Malta (12.1%).
Those aged 15 to 64 also receive the largest percentage (66.5%), which was 69.3% 10 years ago.
