COMMISSION SUPPORT FOR THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES - IT DELIVERED 500,000 DOSES OF FOOT AND MOUTH VACCINE

 Filenews 13 February 2026

The Commission has proceeded to support the occupied territories for the management of foot-and-mouth disease, offering 500,000 vaccines to the government of the Republic of Cyprus.

A relevant announcement states that on February 13, the European Commission delivered 500,000 doses of vaccine against foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) serotype SAT1 to the competent authority of the Republic of Cyprus, in support of vaccination activities in the areas of the Republic of Cyprus where its Government does not exercise effective control.

The vaccines were mobilised by the EU's vaccine bank and made available as emergency assistance to boost immunity in vulnerable farmed animal populations and reduce the risk of further transmission. This support helps protect farmers' livelihoods, ensure animal health and limit the risk of spread to other parts of the island and the wider region.

Next steps

The Commission will continue to monitor the epidemiological situation on the island of Cyprus and assess any additional needs to ensure an effective and proportionate disease control response.

History of fever

Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral disease of farm animals.

The virus occurs in various serotypes. The SAT1 serotype spreads rapidly in the EU's neighbourhood and poses a risk of rapid spread where livestock immunity is non-existent or insufficient. Vaccination remains one of the most effective tools for limiting outbreaks and the spread of the disease, when applied in combination with other control measures.

Through the antigen bank and emergency support mechanisms, the EU contributes to a rapid response and preparedness for serious transboundary zoonoses, complementing disease control efforts and helping to reduce its regional impact.
