The President of EOA Paphos, Charalambos Pittokopitis, characterizes the situation with water in the province of Paphos as manageable, stressing, however, that a necessary condition for maintaining it at controlled levels is the responsible attitude of all consumers.
Mr. Pittokopitis stated that water is a particularly valuable commodity, which is available in limited quantities, which is why restraint and reasonable use is required by everyone, both households and businesses.
In this context, he stated that a meeting was held today, Monday, at the offices of EOA Paphos with the participation of the District Engineer of the Water Development Department and his staff. During the meeting, the practical implementation of the measures decided by the Council of Ministers regarding the management of water resources was discussed.
As it emerged from the discussion and the exchange of views, it became clear that in practice there is not expected to be any water cut in households and businesses, both during the current period and during the summer season, a goal that remains a primary goal for the Organization, as he said.
The President of EOA Paphos stated that the main goal is to limit waste and overconsumption, as well as to reduce losses in the network. At the same time, he noted that the available data are encouraging, as the desalination plant in Kouklia, after March, will provide 20,000 cubic meters of water per day, while an additional 12,000 cubic meters will come from the refinery in Potima.
These quantities, as he mentioned, are considered satisfactory and with proper and rational management, they will allow the needs to be met "without the need for any cut in water supply".
The image at the Mavrokolympos dam, in the area of Pegeia, once again exudes optimism and positive messages after more than a year of absolute destruction. The dam, which due to serious damage had to be completely emptied during the Christmas period of 2024 to be repaired, has literally been half filled today and in the last recording of the Water Department yesterday, it recorded a occupancy rate of 49.5%.
Although Mavrokolympos is not one of the largest dams in the area, its importance is crucial for the production of Paphos since it is the main sponsor of irrigation water to the producers of the lower western Paphos. The flows that have occurred in recent weeks have been treated for this reason as manna from heaven by the producers of bananas and other crops in low-lying Paphos who in 2025 experienced the worst period of their professional occupation due to drought and dam damage.
The authorities clarify, however, that almost 50% of the current occupancy of Mavrokolympos did not come only from the rainwater that has been falling for days in Paphos, but also from the influx of desalination water left over from the Asprokremmos refinery.
In any case, however, the agents of the region point out, the image of Mavrokolympos with water again, is a serious reason for optimism, say producers of Pegeia.
