ALARM FOR NEW DANGEROUS AIRBAGS [JILIN PROVINCE DTN] - INFORMATION FROM DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT

 Filenews 4 February 2026

The Department of Road Transport has issued a warning about dangerous Chinese-made airbags of the company Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co (DTN).

A relevant announcement states:

The Department of Road Transportation informs that the United States National Road Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued an urgent warning regarding the use of dangerous and illegal replacement airbags of Chinese origin. According to this Agency, ten traffic accidents have been recorded in the U.S. that resulted in death or serious injury due to the rupture of replacement airbags, which were manufactured by the company Jilin Province Detiannuo Automobile Safety System Co (DTN).

  • These airbags, which are fitted as replacements, usually on vehicles after previous road accidents, may, in the event of a collision, fail, causing metal fragments to eject, potentially leading to death or serious injury.
  • The Department invites importers and sellers, who may have placed or are placing such products on the market of the Republic of Cyprus, to inform the Department of Road Transport accordingly. It is noted that these economic operators must take all necessary measures to ensure that these products are recalled, as provided for by the relevant legislation. It is recalled that, according to the Technicians Law, engineers and installers keep a history of the changes they make to vehicles.
  • The Department also invites consumers, in case they own these spare parts, to contact and inform the mechanic/installer/seller.
  • In the event that an importer or seller refuses to comply with the above consumer rights, the consumer is invited to submit his complaint in writing to the Consumer Protection Service, through the website www.consumer.gov.cy
  • The Department of Road Transport will inform the Department of Electromechanical Services, in order for it to update the list of installers and engineers. In addition, it will inform POVEK and the Consumer Service.
  • The Department monitors the developments around the issue, and in case of relevant information from the competent European authorities and the Safety Gate early warning system will proceed with additional announcements, actions and a general public information campaign.
  • It is noted that so far there is no indication of their existence in Cyprus
