The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for rains and isolated strong storms, valid from 21:00 on Sunday night until 21:00 on Monday, according to an announcement.

According to the warning, the island is expected to be affected from time to time by a combination of rains and locally strong storms, mainly in the coastal areas. In a storm, hail is not excluded, while in the higher mountains snowfall is expected, which locally may be temporarily dense.

The intensity of the rain is estimated to be between 35 and 55 millimeters per hour, while the total rainfall is likely to exceed 55 millimeters locally in the twenty-four hours, mainly on the coast and in the mountains.

The weather forecast in detail

A barometric low, the center of which is located northwest of Cyprus, moves southeast and affects the area from tonight, while a cold air mass is expected from tomorrow.

In the afternoon, the weather will be mostly cloudy with local rains and possibly an isolated thunderstorm, especially in the south, west and northwest. Snow or sleet may fall in the higher mountains. Winds will be mainly southwesterly, moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and in windward coasts and mountainous areas temporarily very strong to strong, 6 to 7 Beaufort. The sea will be rough to wavy and gradually in the southwest, west and northwest, wavy.

Tonight, a gradual deterioration of the weather is expected, with local rains and isolated thunderstorms, initially in the west and progressively in the rest of the areas. Hail may fall in a storm. In the higher mountains, snowfall is expected, which is locally likely to be dense. Winds will continue to blow mainly southwest, initially strong to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort to later become generally moderate, 4 Beaufort and on the windward coasts and mountains temporarily to strong, 5 Beaufort. In a storm, however, the winds may change and strengthen with stronger gusts. The sea will gradually become generally wavy and in the southwest, west and northwest wavy to very wavy. The temperature will drop to around 8 degrees inland, around 14 on the west and north coasts, around 12 on the rest of the coasts and around 3 degrees in the higher mountains, where locally in leeward areas frost is expected to form.

Tomorrow, the weather will be mostly cloudy, and local rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected at times. Hail may fall in a storm. In the higher mountains, snowfall is expected, which is locally likely to be dense. Winds will be mainly southwest to west, inland and in leeward areas moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and in windward coastal and mountainous areas strong to very strong, 5 to 6 Beaufort. In a storm, however, the winds may change and strengthen with stronger gusts. The sea will be generally wavy to very wavy. The temperature will rise to around 14 degrees inland, around 16 on the coast and around 3 degrees in the higher mountains, where locally in leeward areas there will be frost.

On Tuesday, the weather will remain mostly cloudy with local rains or even the occurrence of an isolated storm. In the higher mountains, snowfall is expected, which is locally likely to be dense. The temperature will drop to fluctuate below normal levels for the season.

On Wednesday the weather will be generally mostly clear with temporarily increased clouds. The temperature will rise slightly.

On Thursday the weather will be partly cloudy with isolated rains and possible sleet or even snow on the highest peaks of Troodos. The temperature will rise further slightly to be close to the average climatic values of the season.
