The British Bases Police has strengthened its maritime presence in the Lady's Mile area and Episkopi Beach, following the purchase of two new jet skis. This new feature was added due to the increased presence of speedboats, yachts and jet ski operators during the summer months.
Sergeant Andreas Fitidis, who led the Naval Unit at Lady's Mile this summer, said the new additions will make a substantial difference to patrols along the coast going forward. He explained: "Not only will they ensure enhanced and highly visible patrols, but they will also allow quick and effective response to incidents. Following the recent increase in maritime traffic, it is important that the Base Police strengthen its presence in order to provide effective crime prevention patrols. During the summer, the police proceeded to issue several reports and investigate various cases involving violations of the Boat Law, so it is important to be able to respond to them."
The jet skis will be operated by trained police officers of the Naval Unit and although they will not be used for pursuits, they can play a decisive role in Search and Rescue operations, as well as in other missions if necessary.

Sergeant Fitidis continued: "They will not be used as the main means of Search and Rescue. However, if such an incident occurs during a patrol, the police officer operating the jet ski will carry out a risk assessment of the situation and may respond to the incident if deemed safe. In addition, due to the construction and versatility of the jet ski, it can be used in incidents where areas are dangerous for police boats, such as in shallow water and in tight spaces."
