THEY ARE ASKING FOR TWO NEW DAMS IN PAPHOS IN AN ORGANISED WAY

Filenews 26 January 2026 - by Dora Christodoulou

The request for the creation of two new dams in the province of Paphos is now coming to the news more often and in an organized way, after the finding that despite the risks of cuts in water supply and despite the very satisfactory rainfall of this period, the existing dams still have not received quantities capable of changing the balance for 2026.

After the destruction of the desalination plant of the province by fire, the emptying of the Mavrokolimbos dam due to damage and the finding that many quantities of water do not end up in the existing dams, the issue of new dams has already been raised by both the president of the EOA Paphos, Charalambos Pittokopitis, and the MPs of Paphos Velentinos Fakontis, Chrysanthos Savvides and Elias Myrianthous.

Everyone emphasizes, in their memoranda and representations lately, the necessity of building small dams in rivers that cross communities, in order to stop significant amounts of water from ending up in the sea. They point out that these projects can be included in the Recovery and Resilience Plan since member states can review their proposed projects and replace them with projects of the highest priority.
