Strong to severe winds of up to 8 Beaufort are expected to hit the island on New Year's Day, with the Department of Meteorology issuing a yellow warning.
As reported, very strong winds, up to strong and locally strong west to northwest winds of intensity 6 to 7 Beaufort are expected to affect the island and mainly the southwest, west, north and interior while gusts of wind may be stormy, 8 Beaufort.
The yellow warning comes into effect from 9:00 in the morning of New Year's Day, until 18:00 on the same day.

Low pressure and a significantly strengthened wind field affect the area, while weak high pressure is expected gradually from tomorrow.
Today, the weather will be partly cloudy and at times mostly cloudy, while isolated rains are expected, without excluding an isolated storm, mainly in the west, north and mountains. On the highest peaks of Troodos and locally in the higher mountains, snow or sleet is expected to fall. Winds will be mainly west to northwest, initially moderate to strong, 4 to 5 Beaufort and soon to very strong, 6 Beaufort and temporarily locally to strong, 7 Beaufort. The wind field will gradually weaken until late afternoon. The sea will be wavy, however in the north and west it will be transient to very wavy. The temperature will rise to 14 degrees inland, around 17 on the coast and 3 degrees in the higher mountains.
Tonight the weather will remain partly cloudy. Winds will be mainly northwest to northeast, initially moderate to strong 4 to 5 Beaufort and later light to moderate, 3 to 4 Beaufort. The sea will gradually become rough and later in the south and east a little rough to rough. The temperature will drop to around 3 degrees inland, around 8 on the west coast, around 5 on the rest of the coasts and around minus 2 degrees in the higher mountains. In mountainous areas and possibly in leeward lowland areas mainly in the interior and southeast, frost will form.
On Friday and Saturday the weather will be mostly clear with temporarily increased clouds.
On Sunday, there will be increased mainly high clouds.
The temperature on Friday will drop, to fluctuate below the average climatic values of the season, however gradually until Sunday a rise is expected.
